Registration and Publishing Identity

Publishing a book requires more than uploading files. Each edition needs a clear publishing identity, accurate ownership information, consistent metadata, and the correct registration records.

Tagger Press can guide authors through Canadian copyright registration, ISBN setup, imprint selection, edition information, retailer metadata, and legal-deposit requirements.

Authors may publish independently under their own name or imprint, or eligible titles may be published under the Tagger Press imprint.

Choose Your Publishing Path

Independent Author

The author publishes under their own name or publishing imprint.

  • Copyright remains with the author.
  • ISBNs are assigned through the author’s own ISBN Canada account.
  • The author remains publisher of record.
  • Publishing accounts and royalties remain under the author’s control.
  • Tagger Press can assist with account setup, registration, metadata, and publication.
Tagger Press Publication

Titles accepted for publication under the Tagger Press imprint are issued with Tagger Press as publisher of record.

  • Copyright remains with the author unless otherwise agreed in writing.
  • Tagger Press assigns ISBNs for each approved format and edition.
  • Tagger Press imprint information appears in the book and retailer metadata.
  • Eligible titles receive catalogue inclusion and an author page on the Tagger Press website.
  • Publishing responsibilities are defined in a written agreement.

Canadian Copyright Registration

Copyright generally exists automatically when an original work is created. Registration provides an official certificate that may be used as evidence of ownership. The current online CIPO filing fee is $63 CAD, and no tax is added.

Copyright Registration Assistance

Tagger Press can:

  • review the ownership and publication information;
  • prepare and submit the online application;
  • act as the author’s authorized filing agent;
  • receive registration correspondence and the certificate;
  • provide the completed registration record to the author.

The author or designated copyright owner remains named as the owner. When an agent is listed, CIPO sends the certificate and correspondence to that agent; naming Tagger Press as agent does not transfer copyright ownership.

Prices

Government filing fee: $63 CAD
Tagger Press filing service: $50 CAD
Total: $113 CAD

Government filing fees are paid in addition to Tagger Press service fees and are non-refundable once the application has been received by CIPO.

Current CIPO online filing fee; subject to government change.

ISBN Setup and Assignment

ISBNs identify individual editions and formats of a book. Paperback, hardcover, ebook, and audiobook editions ordinarily require separate ISBNs.

ISBNs are supplied without charge to eligible Canadian publishers through Library and Archives Canada. LAC provides ISBN services for printed books, ebooks, audiobooks, and other qualifying publications.

Independent-Author ISBN Setup

For authors publishing under their own name or imprint, Tagger Press can assist with:

  • creating an ISBN Canada publisher account;
  • establishing the author or imprint as publisher;
  • assigning ISBNs to each format;
  • entering title, format, edition, and publication information;
  • organizing the author’s ISBN logbook.

The ISBNs remain associated with the author’s publishing identity, not Tagger Press.

Fees

ISBN Canada account and initial title setup: $50 CAD

Includes account assistance and ISBN assignment for up to three formats. Additional title or edition setup: $20 CAD

Tagger Press ISBN Assignment

For books formally published under the Tagger Press imprint:

Canadian publishers may be required to submit copies of their physical and digital publications to Library and Archives Canada. LAC accepts legal deposit for printed and digital publications.

Legal-Deposit Assistance

Tagger Press can:

  • determine which formats require deposit;
  • prepare submission information;
  • assist with digital deposit;
  • organize physical-copy submission;
  • retain deposit records for Tagger Press editions.
